Winter Olympics

Like millions of other people we perched ourselves in front of the television many nights to watch the champions from around the world compete. Watching the Olympics on Eurosport didn't give the same nostalgic drama you get with NBC coverage. There were no gut wrenching inspirational side stories that made you want to root for a particular athlete - it was just the events with some commentary. I personally miss those personal connections with the athletes but that's just me. We did see a very well represented European contingency competing along with the North Americans.

Great Britain earned its first gold medal in the winter Olympics in decades. Amy Williams won the skeleton sled and was honored with a parade in her hometown of Bath because the Brits were just thrilled to have won a medal. Their national identity isn't linked to it's Olympic prowess like Russia who was so disappointed with their 'dismal' 15 medals.

We had our own Winter Olympics with the youth group last Sunday night. We had the bobsled race, snowboarding, pairs figure skating, ice hockey and a new sport - popsicle sucking. Obviously we didn't have any snow or ice so we had to take a little creative license but it was fun. We even enjoyed a medal ceremony.
